Frequently asked questions

Why does Club Lights need audio permission?

Only for the Music Sync feature. To pulse the lights on the beat, the app has to read the shape of the music.

There are two ways it can do that. The first is reading the waveform of a track you play — on Android this goes through the system Visualizer API, and the operating system gates that API behind the audio permission even though no microphone input is captured. The second is the optional microphone mode, which listens to music playing nearby.

In both cases the audio is analysed in real time on your device and immediately discarded. Nothing is recorded, stored or transmitted — we operate no servers to send it to. You can decline the permission and every other feature still works. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.

Why won't the flash dim on my phone?

Because not every phone's LED can be dimmed. Variable torch brightness needs support from both the hardware and the operating system. On a lot of Android devices the torch is simply on-or-off, and on those phones nothing in software can change the beam.

When the app detects that variable strength isn't available, it falls back to full brightness and the slider has no effect. That's a limitation of the device, not a bug in the app.

Two things that still work everywhere: Screen Light brightness is always adjustable, because that's the display rather than the LED; and the Strobe and Music Sync modes still work, since those switch the flash rather than dim it.

How do I pick a track for Music Sync?

From the home screen, tap the Club Lights music card at the top to open Music Sync. Make sure the source is set to From file, then tap Choose a track at the bottom. Your system file picker opens and you select a music file stored on your device.

The file is read locally and copied into the app's temporary cache so that playback can continue smoothly. It is never uploaded, and the cache is cleared by the operating system.

While you're on that screen, two other controls are worth knowing. The Flash / Screen switch at the top decides whether the beat drives the LED or the whole display. Sensitivity — Low, Medium or High — sets how readily the app reacts; turn it up for a sparse or quiet track, down if the lights are firing on everything.

If you'd rather use music that's already playing — from a streaming app, or a speaker in the room — switch the source to Microphone instead. Then the app listens rather than reading a file, and you don't need to pick anything.

Does Club Lights collect any of my data?

No. There's no account and no sign-up, no analytics, no tracking and no profiling. Your settings live on your device and nothing is sent anywhere, because we run no servers at all. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.

Does the app need the camera? Can it take photos?

No. The flashlight is driven through the device's torch API. Club Lights does not request camera permission and cannot take photos or video.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Everything happens on your device, so the app works with no network connection — on a plane, underground, or anywhere with no signal.

The flash turned itself off or got dimmer after a while

That's your phone protecting itself. Running the LED hard heats the camera module, and both Android and iOS will throttle or cut the torch when the device gets too warm or the battery runs low. Let the phone cool down and it will come back.

Long strobe or Music Sync sessions are the usual cause. Keeping the phone out of a pocket or case while it runs helps a lot.

Music Sync isn't reacting to the music

Worth checking, in order:

  • Audio permission is granted — check your device settings for Club Lights.
  • The right source is selected: From file if you picked a song in the app, Microphone if the music is playing elsewhere.
  • In Microphone mode, the music is actually audible to the phone — a very quiet room or a covered microphone won't give it enough to work with.
  • Sensitivity isn't set too low for the track. Nudge it to High and see whether the lights wake up.
  • The output you're watching is the one that's selected — if Screen is active, the LED won't fire, and vice versa.

If it still won't respond, email us and tell us your phone model and OS version.

Is the strobe safe to use?

Flashing light can trigger seizures or dizziness in people with photosensitive conditions, sometimes with no prior history. Don't use the strobe or Music Sync around anyone who may be affected, and stop straight away if anyone feels unwell. Never point flashing light at drivers, cyclists, pilots or anyone operating machinery. See the safety notice in our Terms.

How do I delete my data?

There's nothing for us to delete — we hold nothing. Everything the app stores is on your device, and uninstalling Club Lights removes it in the normal way. If you'd like written confirmation for a GDPR or CCPA request, email us and we'll send it.

Reporting a bug? Please include:

  • Your phone model — for example "Pixel 8a" or "iPhone 14".
  • Your OS version — for example "Android 15" or "iOS 18.4".
  • The Club Lights version, shown at the bottom of the app's settings screen.
  • What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead.

That's usually enough for us to reproduce a problem on the first try, which means a faster fix for you.
